living the dream (by SmackNally)

this building housed text books for detroit’s public schools. a fire forced its closure in 1987 and it’s been abandoned every since. while detroit’s schools and its children remain vastly under-resourced, thousands upon thousands of unused books, many still boxed and in their original packaging, lay to waste and exposed to the elements. profoundly disturbing.

"That picture is of a house in the city of Detroit. Surprised? Don’t be. Detroit actually contains numerous intact neighborhoods ranging from working class to upscale. These are seldom shown in the voluminous photo tours of the city that tend to focus exclusively on decay, and too often on the same handful of sites such as Michigan Central Station, a practice Vice Magazine dubbed “ruin porn.”
"The decay is there. The collapse is real. That is the story. But it’s not the whole story. Amid the truly legitimate and titanic struggles of Detroit there’s another side, one that’s too seldom told. In the interest of completeness, I’ll share some of it today."

This isn’t going to be a narrative of urban decline or the “ruins porn” that’s become fashionable. Rather, it’s a collection of amazing and almost-all-lost footage that celebrates a vibrant, busy and productive Detroit from 1917 through the 1970s. The idea is to bring these images back to Detroiters for their contemplation and use as they rebuild their city for the future. (via Lost Landscapes of Detroit from the Prelinger Archives Boing Boing
