The Always-Closed Marfa Prada May Soon Close for... →
It’s been six years since the world’s loneliest Prada shop opened up in Marfa, Texas (or should we say “closed” since the doors are always locked?). The project, which was assembled by the German artists Michael Elmgreen and Ingar Dragset, has been the subject of a number of reports of vandalism over the years, including the one that took places just a few days after it “opened,” when someone...

The Skyscraper Museum: VERTICAL URBAN FACTORY →
Vertical Urban Factory features the innovative architectural design, structural engineering, and processing methods of significant factory buildings from the turn of the 20th century to the present. Now, over a century after the first large factories began to dominate our cities, the exhibition poses the question: Can factories present sustainable solutions for future self-sufficient cities? ...

Outside Industry Recounts Story of SXSW’s ‘Sell... →
SXSW started in 1987 as a response to showcases in New York and elsewhere that were excluding small indie bands. Austin had received some national recognition from MTV and other media outlets due to its thriving music scene, so a few fans at nascent alternative weekly The Austin Chronicle scraped together a few thousand dollars and started SXSW. The first instance of the festival featured mostly...

Charleston’s Museums Finally Chronicle History of... →
Slavery and its heritage are everywhere here. Charleston was one of the main colonial ports of the 18th century, dealing in rice, indigo and slaves. In 1860 South Carolina held as many slaves as Georgia and Virginia, which were at least twice its size. The genteel grace and European travels of its wealthy citizens were made possible by the enslavement of about half the population. So on a...

A Glow in the West Texas Desert - NYTimes.com →
IN October 2007, Mr. Wells bought this land — a 40-acre parcel — for $8,000 in cash, adding a 20-acre tract for $5,000 a year and a half later. It took nine days and $1,600 to build the shell of his one-room house, the first structure in a compound that now includes four shipping containers under a soaring arched roof planted on a lacy framework of metal trusses, all of which he made...

Preservationists working to save blighted... →
The city has had a demolition by neglect ordinance since the early 1990s. It allows the city to make repairs to endangered properties that have architectural value, and to recoup the cost of those repairs by placing liens on those properties. That ordinance requires only that the buildings to be boarded up, protected from the elements; preservationists now are trying to find new ways to get...

Texans Buy Terracotta Warriers From Forbidden... →
Once word spread that the Forbidden Gardens was closing down, folks began elbowing each other out of the way to grab a piece of it, in what perhaps became one of America’s oddest liquidation sales.

Cognitive Bias and Crime Rates →
The crime rate in Oregon is down, but most Oregonians feel that the rate has gone up, and that they are less safe. I think this story has some interesting parallels with a recent British Medical Journal editorial on cognitive bias, and why what we hear and remember is often very different from the facts we are told. I highly recommend reading both these links together.
